Round 4 Match Review Seniors win against Preston

Seniors v. Preston Bullants Away at W.R. Ruthven Reserve 14.15-99 def. 11.10-76

It was a great result vs UHS-VU last week with our first Senior win and on Saturday we ventured out to Preston to play the Bullants on their home turf. Like all away games they're challenging and we acknowledged that Preston had their backs to the wall without a win so far. We knew they would bring the heat, and with the added advantage of a home turf (a junior ground at best) we expected a tough game. We understood the game would be a grind and we needed to remain patient and continue focussing on our strengths because the game would have momentum swings. Considering there was a 2 or 3 goal advantage to one end, these games are tactical, you need to take your opportunities and also embrace an ounce of luck from time to time.

Preston started well and kicked some early goals before the Panthers settled and replied with goals of our own. Some inaccurate kicking at goal and missed opportunities saw us up only 9 at the quarter. The second quarter was very similar to the first with Preston starting well and dominating around the stoppage and creating opportunities off the back off some poor turnovers by us. We seemed to have most of the play in the first half but goals came more workmanlike for us. Both Lachie Mirams and Angus Grant controlled the ruck taps, and provided us with marking options around the ground to connect from backline to forward line, and Comrey Edgeworth brought his own football with 9 marks in the first half and a wall across half back.

After some adjustment at half time the Panthers controlled the last half of the game as we extended our lead. Darcy Brown was everywhere and kicked three team-lifting second half goals from the wing, which was a driver for the team to build the momentum. We have contributors all over the ground with special mentions to Jai Florent dominating his wing and Keiffer Smith-Cameron continuing his strong season form from midfield. Midway through the last quarter the Panthers extended the lead to 41 points, only for Preston to kick some late goals to reduce the margin. A pleasing result and we banked our second win to square up the season with 2W and 2L.
